Private within the Roger family

PRIMARY ADDRESS / Cellar Door

1 Rue Winston Churchill 21200 Epernay

This family run house is famous for its popularity in England but remains distinctly French and very aware of its history. When Krug was purchased by LVMH in 1999, Pol Roger snapped up Dominique Petit who has helped spur production upgrades and an increased focus on quality. With production just under 2 million bottle annually they are a mid-sized house but widely distributed, especially in the UK and Australia where sales are strong.

ESTIMATED ANNUAL PRODUCTION

1.8 million bottles

FRUIT SOURCED FROM

51% from estate owned vines (roughly 90 hectates) – Ay, Cramant, Marne, Epernay Choilly.

CHEF DE CAVE

Dominique Petit (former Krug Chef de Cave)

GENERAL WINE-MAKING STYLE

Creamy, full flavoured, rich wines with finesse and structure.

GENERAL WINE-MAKING PROCESS

Stainless steel separate parcel vinification, low slow temperature primary fermentation. Hand-riddled bottles, long maturation and a high proportion of reverse wines used for the NV.

FAMOUS FOR

The brand’s association with the English royal family and their affinity to serve Pol Roger to guests at functions.  They also produce a higher proportion of vintage Champagne than nearly every other house (especially the larger ones) which is rare.

INTERESTING FACT

It’s rumored that Sir Winston Churchill was a frequent drinker of Pol Roger, drinking a pint per day early, disguised in a tankard so as not to appear feminine during his war days. Their cellar door street address was even renamed 1 Rue de Winston Churchill in his honor.
